A group’s life experiences |
We take great pride in the multitude of achievements that have marked our group’s history over the years and even more in the testimonials we get from our employees, who take an active part in the development of Canam Group. Whether they are involved with steel joist product design, customer service, just-in-time delivery or research and development, their focus is always on the customer and on meeting customer needs.

Lead Welder, Structural Shop,
Jacksonville
I’ve been welding in a fab shop for the past 15 years, and about 12 years ago I heard this company was looking for a welder. I’ve never regretted taking the job; the people here are really down to earth, nice people; you can get along with just about anybody here. I really like my work to be challenging, and my favorite was a job we did a couple months ago for Hyundai Mobis, where we had to weld structural columns with 5-inch base plates.

Machine Operator, Prep
Washington Plant
I began working for Canam Steel in Washington, MO eight years ago. Prior to that, I had worked in the automotive industry for 30 years. It was time for a change, but at 50 years of age it was not an easy task of finding something that is not auto-related and most employers were looking for younger personnel.
Canam took the change with me and my age, and it has worked out very well. I operate a shear in the plant and have earned the respect of my fellow workers both in the plant, office and management alike.
It is very easy to talk to anyone employed here at Canam Washington about any concerns I might have had, and they are handled very professionally. Having said what I have, this is what makes me enjoy coming to work here very day, and I hope to continue to do so for several years to come (my wife said I had to work till I was 80!)

Administrative Assistant, Sales
I came to Canam in 1994 on a temporary assignment that was to last approximately one month. Eleven years later, I'm still here! I was hired to do data entry for the Estimating Department, and began learning how to estimate joist and deck projects. The work was so interesting it led me to the Sales Department and I found myself a Sales Representative, covering Northeastern New York, Connecticut and Western Massachussetts-- a position I had never planned to be in, but one that I enjoyed very much! After I had my daughter in 1999, I didn't want to be on the road anymore; and Canam has placed me in a position that allows me to be flexible with my hours, yet challenged by administrative work for the Sales Department. The most important thing in my life is my child, and Canam has made it very easy to be a working mother, something that is invaluable to me and my family!

Hambro Foreman
Jacksonville Plant
I started out working for Canam in 1971 in my hometown of Claremont, New Hampshire. I was 19 years old and at the time I was working at a meat cutting company. One day I noticed a new building being constructed in a field that I used to hay when I was a boy. I decided to go in and find out what kind of company was coming to town. At that time I met Roger Dutil, George Campbell & John White. I was offered a job and I began on February 11, 1972. I was taught how to weld, read blueprints, run a shear, bender and all sorts of tools of the trade.
Twelve years later in 1984, I was asked to go to the plant in Washington, MO that had been purchased by Canam, so I uprooted my family and headed to Missouri. That is where I first met Marcel Dutil and had the pleasure of working with Gaby Belanger and Celeste Peters. I worked as a supervisor on a grinder line, short span, and also did warehouse and receiving work.
In 1992 Canam gave me an opportunity to work in Juarez, Mexico for a month, which was a challenging, but fun, experience.
Finally, when Canam bought the Jacksonville plant, I transferred to Florida in 1995 and have been there ever since. I currently hold a supervisor position running Hambro lines and short span. My fantasy is for the shop here in Florida to be air-Conditioned!
All in all, my 35 years at Canam have been rewarding. |
