In Delivery: Canam U.S. delivers components for a living roof

The Canam U.S. plant in Sunnyside, WA, recently delivered various components that will be used in the construction of a “living roof” for a new West Elm furniture store that is slated to open in Emeryville, CA, next year.
The steel components for the standing-seam roofing system consist of approximately 30 tons of barrel joists and short-span joists. Unlike a traditional roof, the joists will be topped by a combination of metal deck, waterproof membrane and insulation. Soil and living greenery will be added when the construction is complete.
The green roof industry is a growing sector due to the grants that builders are eligible to receive when they integrate environmentally-friendly components in buildings. “Living roofs” feature vegetated roof covers, with soil and plants taking the place of bare membrane, gravel ballast, shingles or tiles. Some of the environmental benefits include filtering pollution, improving stormwater runoff, and depending upon the design, reducing a building’s heating and cooling costs.
Canam’s customer for the project is Olson Steel of California.
