Our milestones

From the very start, Canam Group employees have been motivated by a passion to provide each customer with high-quality products and on-time delivery. Canam Group has flourished over the last 50 years thanks to the hard work of its talented and dedicated employees, and especially, its loyal customers and business partners.

Today, Canam Group is one of the largest fabricators of construction products in North America. The company operates 25 manufacturing plants and engineering offices in Canada, the United States, Romania, India and China, and has partnerships with companies in several other countries. Canam Group employs over 3,000 people.


1960-1969: Early beginnings

Canam Steel Works Inc., the group’s first entity, was founded on August 15, 1960 by Gilberte Lacroix-Dutil, Roger Dutil and an American investor, Albert Goldberg. The word Canam, is a fusion of the first syllables of Canada and America.

Construction of the 12,800-sq. ft. plant in St. Gédéon de Beauce began in the winter of 1960-1961. Fabrication officially started on May 5, 1961 with a dozen seasonal employees.

1960
Canam Steel Works is founded in St. Gédéon de Beauce, Quebec, to fabricate steel joists.

1961
Production begins at the 12,800-sq. ft. plant on May 5, 1961 with a dozen seasonal employees.

1966
Manac inc. is founded in St. Georges, Quebec, by Marcel Dutil, who will become the sole owner of Canam in 1972 with the founding of The Canam Manac Group.


1970-1979: The company begins to grow


Expansion:
  • Construction of a plant in Boucherville, Quebec, to fabricate steel deck.
  • The Canam Manac Group Inc. is founded in St. Georges, Quebec.
  • Construction of a second plant in St. Gédéon for the fabrication of shortspan and Hambro joists.

Acquisitions and purchase of ownership interests:
  • Purchase of an ownership interest in Hambro, a company located in Ottawa, Ontario.
  • Acquisition of a 33,000-square-foot (3065 m2) plant in Claremont, New Hampshire.


1980-1989: Entry onto the stock market


Expansion:
  • Expansion in Canada and the U.S. through acquisitions
  • Start-up of a steel joist fabrication plant in Mississauga, Ontario, and acquisition of Thames Steel Construction.
  • The Canam Manac Group Inc. is listed on the Montreal Exchange in 1984 with a public offering of 1,030,000 subordinate Class A shares priced at $3.17 per share (issued at $9.50 in 1984, the shares are split 3-for-1 in 1986).
  • In 1986, The Canam Manac Group Inc. makes a new public offering of 3,300,000 subordinate Class A shares at $15.50 per share.

Acquisitions:
  • Midwestern Joists in Washington, Missouri
  • Standard Building Systems in Point of Rocks, Maryland
  • Steel Joist of Indiana Inc. in Lafayette, Indiana
  • Pitt Steel Holdings Ltd., a company specialized in steel preparation and storage
  • Lord & Cie limitée, a structural steel fabricator
  • Coloco in Jarny, France, specialized in the fabrication of structural steel, electric transmission towers, coal-fired boilers and steel piping
  • Manitoba Rolling Mills, a mini-mill in Winnipeg, Manitoba
  • C.B.S. Joists in Milton, Ontario


1990-1999: U.S. expansion


Expansion:
  • Creation of Steel Plus Network, a business group composed of reputable North American structural steel fabricators and steel construction industry suppliers.
  • Steel Plus Engineering Services is founded in Brasov, Romania (becomes Technyx in 2004).
  • In 1998, The Canam Manac Group passes the $1 billion mark in sales.

Acquisitions and purchase of ownership interests:
  • Plant in Columbus, Ohio
  • Plant in Jacksonville, Florida
  • Canron plant in Calgary, Alberta
  • Lightsteel Industries Inc., located in Boucherville, Quebec
  • Romsa, a subsidiary of Grupo IMSA, based in Monterrey, Mexico
  • Sun Steel, in Sunnyside, Washington
  • Marshall Steel Limited, in Laval, Quebec
  • Structal 1982 Inc., located in Quebec City, Quebec
  • Société Sévrienne de construction métallique (37%), in Niort, France
  • Canam de México (32.3%), in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico
  • Expanpro (80%), in St. Nicolas, Quebec


2000-2009: Renewed focus on construction products


Expansion:
  • The company posts record sales of $1,110,597,000 in 2000, compared with $1,043,614,000 the previous year.
  • Creation of a new business unit: Canam International
  • Canam Asia is formed in partnership with Zamil Steel, a joint venture in which Canam Group holds a 35% interest.
  • Bridge fabrication begins at the Point of Rocks, Maryland, plant.

2010: Looking to the Future

  • 80% interest in structural steel fabricator, FabSouth
  • Acquisition of the assets of United Steel Deck with plants located in South Plainfield, New Jersey and Peru, Illinois.
