High Profile Smithsonian Museum Gets Point of Rocks Long Spans
The Point of Rocks, MD plant fabricated 256 tons of deep longspan joists, midspan joists and bridging for the restoration facility being built to connect to the main National Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA.
The Udvar-Hazy Center is the second most popular aviation museum in the United States. Six million people visit the museum each year, and the restoration facility, which opens in 2010, will include a viewing gallery so that visitors can observe the historic aircraft undergoing restoration for display in the museum next door.
Banker Steel, Lynchburg, VA, was Canam’s customer for the project; the general contractor is Hensel Phelps of Chantilly, VA.

Some of the deep long spans are 164’ long and 120” deep.
