Local Officials Commend Canam at Maryland Ceremony
Canam Recognized as Creative Business Planning Firm of the Year
Canam’s Point of Rocks plant was celebrated as Frederick County, Maryland’s “Creative Business Planning Firm of the Year” at a ceremony October 28 attended by several hundred local businesspeople.
New line of work to embrace the future
In bestowing the award, Office of Economic Development (OED) Director Laurie Boyer said Canam is “a long time Frederick County company that has strategically expanded and taken on a completely new line of work to embrace the future,” referring to the Mid-Atlantic’s move into fabrication of bridges. The plant has been certified by the American Institute of Steel Construction for both Major and Simple Bridge fabrication, and is adding two lines for manufacturing bridge components to its already existing joist and complex structural steel operations.
OED officials toured the plant in August for a first-hand observation of the equipment and training Canam has undertaken to add bridge fabrication, in response to the decline in the joist market. The OED and State of Maryland have assisted Canam in receiving grant money to train employees in new welding techniques and other processes.
