Canam Trusses Support Towers of New Baltimore Hilton Convention Center Hotel

BALTIMORE, Aug. 21 − Nearly 400 tons of steel trusses detailed, fabricated and shipped from Canam Steel Corporation’s Point of Rocks, MD, plant frame the two towers of the $300-million Baltimore Hilton Convention Center Hotel opening Friday.

The huge tower trusses, fabricated by Canam in the fall and winter of 2007, were among the company’s most high-profile and challenging projects of the year. The City of Baltimore constructed the 20-story, 757-room Hilton at 401West Pratt Street, just north of Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

The West Tower, rising 20 stories above Baltimore, features the largest grand ballroom in Baltimore and includes 17 Canam joists, each 122 feet long, that required special permits and escorts through the city from the Frederick County, MD, manufacturing plant. Canam manufactured 31 joists, each 97 feet long, for the East Tower. The two large roofs atop the building’s East and West Towers create the city’s largest living green roof, totaling 32,000 square feet.

"It was a great experience to have two Maryland steel fabrication companies working together on a job that's so important for tourism in our state," said Charlie Most, president of Baltimore Steel Erectors, a diversified fabrication company in charge of design coordination, steel fabrication and erection for the project.

The erection of the steel components this past year followed the erection of 165 tons of 300-foot trusses that now allow pedestrians to walk across Howard Street from the hotel to the Convention Center. Visitors to Camden Yards using Howard Street walk under Canam’s pedestrian bridge to arrive at the stadium entrance.

Because the pedestrian bridge crosses over Baltimore's light rail line as well as Howard Street, work hours in March 2007 were restricted to five-hour windows on Friday and Saturday nights when the light rail trains were not running.

Canam Steel Corporation is the U.S. subsidiary of Canam Group, which operates 12 plants specialized in the design and fabrication of construction products and solutions. The company employs more than 3,000 people in Canada, the United States, Romania and India, and has partnerships with companies in Mexico, France, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Russia and China.
